Jailer 2 becomes first Tamil film to cross Rs 800 crore worldwide
Rajinikanth's action sequel has passed Rs 800 crore in global gross, the first Tamil film to reach that mark, and is still drawing audiences on its third weekend.
Jailer 2, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, reached Rs 800 crore worldwide on its 18th day in theatres. After its third weekend the film's global gross stood at Rs 808 crore, making it the highest-grossing Tamil film so far.
The film opened with about Rs 400 crore over an extended four-day weekend. Its domestic earnings now stand at Rs 456 crore net, and overseas collections have reached nearly $29 million. It has also moved past the worldwide totals of the Hindi films PK and Chhaava.
Collections are expected to fall sharply on Monday, and the film opens against the upcoming release of Ramayana later this week. Even so, it could still reach around Rs 850 crore. Rajinikanth returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian in the Sun Pictures production, with Mohanlal, Hrithik Roshan, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff in cameo roles.
