Patrick Stewart, a Gulf favourite, dies at 86
Actor Patrick Stewart, known for Star Trek and X-Men roles, has died at 86. His UAE visits, including a Dubai film festival honour, are being recalled.
Patrick Stewart died at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, his family said. His wife, Sunny Ozell, was with him after a brief illness with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia. He was 86.
Stewart had strong ties to the UAE. In December 2014 he was named a Chivas Legend at a gala dinner at the Armani Hotel inside Burj Khalifa in Dubai. In December 2017, he attended the opening night of the 14th Dubai International Film Festival at Madinat Jumeirah and received a Lifetime Achievement Award.
During that festival trip, he and his wife visited the Louvre Abu Dhabi, which had opened to the public only about three weeks earlier. At a festival session he encouraged audiences to visit the museum, praising the way its collection is arranged.
