Manchester United came from two goals down to beat Roma 3-2 at Old Trafford in the Champions League. Roma had led through goals from Matías Soulé and Donyell Malen, but Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty in the 58th minute after his first attempt was saved and retaken. He then set up Matheus Cunha for the equaliser in the 83rd minute, and Cunha scored again three minutes later before being sent off in stoppage time.

Fernandes addressed speculation about his relationship with Carrick, which followed his public criticism of the manager's tactics after a 4-1 defeat to Como. Carrick dropped the captain for one match, and Fernandes was back for the Premier League defeat to Chelsea before keeping his place against Roma. He said there had been no disagreement behind the scenes, accepted that his recent performances justified the decision, and said his support for the manager and squad remained unchanged.

The win ended United's run of nine matches without a victory. Fernandes said supporters had been frustrated by the club's form and hoped the result would mark a turning point in the season.
