Neymar hails Ronaldo as Portugal legend retires from international football
Cristiano Ronaldo's decision to retire from international football drew tributes across the sport, including a one-word message from Brazil's Neymar.
Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, has confirmed on Instagram that he is ending his international career, which began in 2003. He said he will return Portugal's number seven shirt after the November international break.
Ronaldo leaves the national team as Portugal's record goalscorer and most-capped player, with 146 goals in 234 appearances. He also won three major honours with the side, lifting the European Championship in 2016 and the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
Neymar, who was often Ronaldo's rival when he played for Barcelona while Ronaldo was at Real Madrid, responded with a single word, Lenda, meaning legend. Neymar himself retired from Brazil duty earlier this year as the country's all-time leading scorer with 80 goals in 130 appearances.
