Rooney Puts Blame on United Players as Carrick's Side Struggle
Wayne Rooney has questioned the commitment of Manchester United's players while defending manager Michael Carrick, saying the squad needs a major overhaul.
Speaking at a dinner event with a live question-and-answer session at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel in Dubai on Wednesday evening, former United striker Wayne Rooney said the players were not working hard enough on the pitch. He said that the responsibility for improving performances could not rest solely with the manager.
United are currently 16th in the Premier League with seven points from eight matches, two places above the relegation zone. They have gone eight games without a win in all competitions, losing five and drawing three, and their latest setback was a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday. Carrick was seen apologising to fans after that match, as he was after the previous game.
Rooney, who scored a club-record 253 goals in 559 appearances, said a complete refresh was needed at the club and that changing the manager alone would not solve the problems. He added that losing the dressing room would make it hard for any manager to recover.
