Egyptian authorities have confirmed that a cyberattack caused sexually explicit footage to be shown on a large digital billboard overlooking one of Cairo's busiest roads. The incident took place on Thursday, October 29, on the 26 July Corridor in Giza, heading towards Sheikh Zayed City, and videos of the screen spread widely on social media.

The Interior Ministry said the billboard belonged to an advertising company that had contracted an international firm to distribute content electronically. After that firm's website was hacked, the footage was broadcast at the same time on the Giza billboard and on similar screens in several other countries, the ministry said. It added that legal measures had been taken.

Al Arabia United Advertising Company said it had detected unauthorised access to one of its screens by an unidentified party. It shut the screen as a precaution and is investigating with the relevant authorities. Officials are also examining the video to verify its authenticity and identify who operated the screen.
