Mayon Volcano erupts in Philippines as Alert Level 3 stays in force
Residents in Albay province heard a loud boom as Mayon Volcano erupted on Friday, and the surrounding area remains under Alert Level 3.
Mayon Volcano, located in the Bicol region about 500km east of Manila, erupted around noon on Friday, October 30. Residents of Albay province reported hearing a loud boom, and an ongoing effusive eruption continues at the site.
The Philippine volcano and seismology agency says Alert Level 3 means magma is near or at the surface and a hazardous eruption could occur within weeks. The designation allows the danger zone to be widened to 8km from the active crater.
The agency has advised evacuation of the 6km Permanent Danger Zone. Residents have also been urged to watch for pyroclastic currents, lahars and sediment-laden streamflows, and to avoid flights close to the summit.
