Beyond grades: what children truly need for happiness

A former school principal argues that a child's happiness goes beyond academic results and material comforts.

Two or three decades ago, parents sent children to school with reminders about studying, finishing homework and eating their tiffin. Today the farewell is more often a wish to have a good time. Parents still want the best for their children, but the emphasis on what makes a good childhood has shifted.

The article argues that strong exam results, holidays and smiling family photographs do not reveal what a young person may be feeling privately. For children, happiness rests on feeling loved, secure and accepted, having friends, speaking freely and having someone to turn to when things go wrong. It does not mean being cheerful every day, since disappointment, anxiety and sadness are a normal part of growing up.

Drawing on experience as a school principal and later in supporting school leaders, the author says high achievement and well-being do not always go together. Report cards record academic progress but cannot show how a child feels about themselves. Schools have become more aware of this wider responsibility, with counsellors, special educators and other support staff helping pupils with difficulties that affect both learning and life.
