UAE filmmaker's new documentary takes on menopause and its effect on marriage
Dubai-based filmmaker Punam Verma is set to release Men On Pause, a humorous documentary on menopause and the way it affects relationships.
UAE-based filmmaker and TV host Punam Verma is releasing a new documentary, Men On Pause, on YouTube on November 6. The film examines menopause, the biological stage when a woman's periods stop permanently, and the often overlooked strain it places on marriages.
The documentary includes interviews with experts and with men and women who have gone through menopause. Among the contacts she approached were menopause specialist Dr Louise Newson and therapist Marisa Peer. Verma said the project grew out of conversations with friends who felt their husbands did not understand the change, and she said she chose to include men in the film because of the link she sees between menopause and divorce.
It is Verma's second documentary, following We Need To Talk, which won a Muhr Award at the 2012 Dubai International Film Festival. Verma said the film uses humour to address a sensitive subject and offers an overview rather than an in-depth study.
