The Karnataka government has alleged that oil companies supplied petrol with ethanol levels of up to 31.2 per cent, well above the 20 per cent limit. The state said the blend exceeded the permitted level.

Public sector oil companies have rejected these findings. They pointed to flawed sampling and procedural non-compliance as reasons the results cannot be relied upon.
