Antonelli crowned Formula One's youngest world champion in Mexico City
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli secured the Formula One world title with a third-place finish at the Mexico City Grand Prix, becoming the sport's youngest champion.
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli clinched the Formula One world championship on Sunday after finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix. At 20 years and 68 days, he became the youngest world champion in the sport's history, and he needed only two points to secure the title.
Antonelli started fourth and stayed there for much of the race. A red flag came out after Valtteri Bottas's suspension failed on lap 46 and he hit the barriers; Bottas was not hurt. At the standing restart, Charles Leclerc locked up and Antonelli moved into third, holding that place to the finish, about four seconds behind winner Max Verstappen.
His race engineer Peter Bonnington and team principal Toto Wolff congratulated him over the team radio. Antonelli said the weekend had felt more tense than usual and that he slowed on his cool-down lap because he could not see the track.
