Australia's Court of Appeal in Victoria dismissed Erin Patterson's appeal on Friday, upholding her convictions for three murders. Judge Stephen McLeish said the offences were carefully planned and deliberate, and he replaced her earlier sentence, which allowed parole eligibility after 33 years, with life imprisonment with no prospect of parole.

Patterson, 52, was found guilty last year of killing her husband's parents, Don and Gail Patterson, and his aunt, Heather Wilkinson, after serving them a beef lunch laced with death cap mushrooms at her home in rural Victoria in July 2023. Her husband's uncle, Ian Wilkinson, fell gravely ill but survived. She was also convicted of attempted murder. Patterson, who maintained the meal was accidentally contaminated, followed the trial by video link from a maximum security prison near Melbourne.

At an earlier appeal hearing, her lawyers argued that the trial had been marred by irregularities, including jurors staying in the same hotel as a police witness and members of the prosecution. The court rejected her bid to have the convictions quashed.
