India has amended its vehicle rules to permit 100% ethanol, known as E100, in vehicles certified as flex-fuel. The change does not extend to ordinary petrol cars, which could face engine damage if they run on the fuel.

The move comes alongside plans for higher ethanol blending mandates, including E20, and new models from vehicle manufacturers. Together, these steps are intended to strengthen the country's national biofuel programme.

Car owners who do not have a flex-fuel vehicle are advised to check their vehicle's certification before using E100.
